Discover the different ways to create optical illusions, from floating cubes, to bulges and other three-dimensional effects in weaving. Varied techniques and weaving structures – double weave, Bronson lace, shadow weaves – can be used to create these visual effects on everything from 2-shafts looms and rigid heddles to multiple shafts.
Stacey Harvey-Brown has been teaching weaving since 2005, firstly at The Loom Room in the UK and now, from her new studio near Nérac, in the heart of Gascony, SW France. Insatiable curiosity leads Stacey down unusual pathways, both technically and artistically, with inspiration sparked through animal, floral, and geological forms. She earned her MA exploring how the processes of nature, in particular the geology of plate tectonics, could be translated into dimensional and sculptural form in weaving. She continues to develop work on a 24S AVL and to hone the essence of the techniques to 8 shafts, in order to make them accessible to more weavers. Her new book, Woven Optical Illusions, will be available in March of 2024 from The Crowood Press. www.theloomroom.co.uk
