Liz Keefe loves the complex geometric patterns of weaving as well as the occasional challenge of creating curved lines in a square world. She uses fabric to explore the emotional intensity of color.
Her most recent work involves upcycled sari silk ribbons from India, woven in geometric patterns or solid blocks of color. Both techniques result in vibrant abstract patterns. The silk Liz receives are leftover pieces from sari production, pulled into strips about 2″ wide, sewn end to end, and then twisted into skeins, ready for distribution. Unrolling a skein is always a surprise, with new color combinations and patterns.
In this presentation Liz will take us through a weaving journey that started with traditional overshot patterns and that led to her current designs with silk ribbons. She will also touch on ideas of how to work with color choices, weaving and unweaving and evaluating a work as it evolves, and how to keep creativity alive.
Liz is a member of City Art Cooperative Gallery in San Francisco.
