SUMMER RERUN: Threads through Time — Kami-Ito and Shifu”
Sabrina Sachiko Niebler

It’s summertime and, while we officially still have a program night in July (and none in August), lots of guild members are traveling or at Convergence. So we’re making summertime reruns a thing, digging into past presentations and dusting them off to give those who haven’t seen them before a second chance. We’ll still have plenty of time for visiting with each other and sharing any show and tell items you might have.

In this presentation from January of 2023, Sabrina Sachiko Niebler (Sachi) shared her exploration of kami-ito (paper thread) and shifu (paper cloth), a time-honored Japanese process with a deep appreciation for handwork by turning washi into thread and then into cloth. An informative and insightful look into an old-world practice and how its quiet power can bring meaning, fortitude and inner connection through slow process.

Sabrina Sachiko Niebler has been exploring and practicing the craft of weaving shifu (paper cloth) through traditional Japanese methods for several years. Having woven with paper since her Fine Arts Degree from the Alberta University of the Arts (ACAD), Sachi has found a deepened affinity for working with paper through this beautiful method. Practice, experimentation, research, travel, and mentorship continue to be a part of her journey in developing skills to weave fine paper cloth and communicate through it. Originally from Calgary, Sachi now lives and works in Vancouver, BC. www.sabrinasachiko.com

Originally developed as a time and place for the guild’s  spinners together wheels in a circle and spin, it has now transformed into a general “come as you are” night to chat, weave, spin, and craft. There is no special program, so bring a friend and come hang-out. You can work on a personal project or not. Knitting and crochet are welcome!

As a bonus, our guild’s Library is housed in this room at the ARC. The guild’s Librarian will be there to meet with you, and the Library is always open to members.

Don’t think you’ll have time to look through articles of books during meetings? Not to worry! Browse our online catalog which allows you to search for specific things, such as a technique, or an author. Guild members have borrowing privileges!

Please note that there are is no official guild programming in August.
