The making of kami-ito (paper thread) and shifu (paper cloth) is a time-honored process which involves a deep appreciation for handwork. In this presentation, Sabrina Sachiko Niebler (Sachi) will share about the history of this tradition, her journey of exploration with it, and detail the process of turning washi into thread and then into cloth. An informative and insightful look into an old-world practice and how it’s quiet power can bring meaning, fortitude and inner connection through slow process.
Sabrina Sachiko Niebler has been exploring and practicing the craft of weaving shifu (paper cloth) through traditional Japanese methods for several years. Having woven with paper since her Fine Arts Degree from the Alberta University of the Arts (ACAD), Sachi has found a deepened affinity for working with paper through this beautiful method. Practice, experimentation, research, travel, and mentorship continue to be a part of her journey in developing skills to weave fine paper cloth and communicate through it. Originally from Calgary, Sachi now lives and works in Vancouver, BC. www.sabrinasachiko.com
