An overview of the basic velvet structures and types, velvet-specific tools, and affordable loom set-ups for single-pile warps, suitable for 4-shaft looms and novice experiences.
Dr. Wendy Landry is a weaver and textiles scholar in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. She was part of the regular part-time faculty at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design – NSCAD University, and has taught Costume History at Dalhousie University. She has analyzed archaeological textiles at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and for Parks Canada. Her doctoral dissertation, entitled “Why Crafts Matter: Mapping the Terrain of Crafts Study,” addressed issues in Canadian post-secondary professional crafts education and the development of crafts scholars and scholarship. Her case study of ancient Coptic velvet-weaving demonstrated the ability of craft practitioners to critique under-examined premises and make significant new contributions to knowledge through experimental archaeology with potential for contemporary creators.
