Program Night: Chromatic Fantasy: Music, Mathematics and Magic in Doubleweave, Jennifer Moore
Thursday, November 14, 2024
7:00 to 9:00 pm CDT
For nearly forty years Jennifer Moore has been exploring relationships between weaving, mathematics, and music in her doubleweave wallpieces. From the first time that she sat down at a loom, she was drawn to an orderly universe of colored threads and the rhythmic repetition in the process of weaving. Because of her background in piano and pipe organ, she felt an immediate affinity with this new stringed instrument whose patterns flowed from her hands in the form of color and design rather than sound.
In this presentation, Jennifer will show how she’s used doubleweave pick-up as a medium for geometric designs and color harmonies. She’ll explain the basic principles of the golden proportion, symmetry movements, tessellations and fractals, and show how she’s used them in her work.
Jennifer Moore is known for her luminous color gradations and distinctive designs that are at once both balanced and dynamic. Widely exhibited and winning numerous domestic and international awards, her work has been published in numerous books and magazines. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in weaving from the University of Oregon. She travels extensively throughout the U.S. and abroad teaching workshops on doubleweave, color and geometric design. Her techniques and systems for working in doubleweave can also be found in her book, The Weaver’s Studio: Doubleweave Revised and Expanded. She currently maintains a studio in Santa Fe, New Mexico. doubleweaver.com
