October 2017 Meetings

Program Night — Selecting and Cleaning a Wool Fleece

October 12, 2017
6:30 pm to 9:00 pm

Northwest Recreation Center
2913 Northland Dr.
Austin, TX 78731

This month we will talk about how to select and clean raw wool fleece.  We usually get there at 6:30 pm for visiting and checking out what people have brought to share.  Short business meeting and program start at 7:00 pm.

We are fortunate of have around nine sheep farms around us, giving us an opportunity to spin and felt local fiber.  But what breed is right for your intended purpose?  And how do you select a fleece that will be relatively easy to process with a minimum of wastage?

Thursday we will look at the various local breeds and explore the advantages and challenges of each. Charlene Steele from KidKat Ranch will join us to talk about her Leicester Longwool sheep and their wool.  Other breeders have sent us samples of their wool for us to examine, with some to take home.

Even if you are not a spinner or felter, you will gain a new appreciation of the magnificent qualities of wool and understand the commitment and passion of our local producers.
